De Amerikaanse media gaven Ray Charles Robinson pretentieuze bijnamen als "The Genius" en "The High Priest of Soul" of, eenvoudiger gezegd, "Brother Ray", maar in het begin was hij gewoon een plattelandsjongen wiens ambities niet verder gingen dan het maken van een leven als zanger en pianist. Hij groeide op met blues en jazz, en zou tevreden zijn geweest met een plekje om te zonnebaden in de zonneschijn van roem naast "broers" zoals hij, degenen die hebben bijgedragen aan het populair maken van Rhythm & Blues in de jaren vijftig, maar... Ray was de enige die een dodelijk geheim wapen droeg: Gospel. Tot grote ontsteltenis van zijn Afro-Amerikaanse broers had Ray het lef - en zelfs het genie - om de extases en trances die in religie schuilgaan naar boven te halen en ze aan de wereld buiten de kerk te laten zien. In 2023 wordt de 40e verjaardag van Donna Summer's "Hard For The Money"-tour gevierd. Dit concert werd gefilmd en live opgenomen op 6 augustus 1983 in het Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, CA, met een publiek van 18.000 fans, tijdens de tweede etappe van de tour.
